Buhse Home Page

This page is dedicated to documenting the Buhse family tree which we are currenty able to track back to August Buhse in Hamburg Germany. We know that the Ernest Buhse family emigrated to Armprior, Ontario in 1892. Two or three brothers also emigrated to Armprior, Ontario in 1901 ( Albert is one known.) August Buhse and his family then traveled to Kendal, Saskatchewan to claim their homestead. Albert move to the USA.

This One room School house is probably indicative of what the early pioneers saw when they first got to Saskatchewan.Growing up on the Canadian prairies, we were unaware that other Buhse's even existed. However, we have traced the Buhse roots in Canada back to Ship records. With the popularity of the Internet, we have also noted several Buhse's in Germany, as well as some in the USA. A who/where search listed approximately 40 address listings, most of which live in the NorthEastern US. Given the limited geographical distribution of the Buhse, I would guess that most and maybe even all of these families are related Judging by the limited number of Buhses.

The following article was printed in _______ paper on _______.
August and Hanna with their two sons, Ernest and Irvin came to Armprior, Ontario from Germany in the early 1890's. Helena was born there. In 1905 they came to Saskatchewan bringing their nephew Ronald Laskey with them. They stayed with friends at Balgonie, Mr. and Mrs. August Siebert for awhile. There they bought a team of Oxen, a wagon and a plow then started the long trek to file a homestead on NW1/4 S. 28 - 14-12, southeast of Kendal. Ernest being of age was able to file for SE Sec. 28 - 14 - 12. (John Rosom had NE quarter and P.J. Ripplinger had the SW quarter).

August and Hanna with their sons built a sod house and plastered it with brown clay. This building held all their belongings and the oxen. They lived in this building for three years. In 1908 they took out a loan for $800 and built a frame house and traded off the oxen for a team of horses. Not being able to read and write English caused a few problems, with interest payments, buying more horses, etc. Next to their building was a slough which to this day is referred to as Buhse Lake.

In 1934 Ernest moved to Windthorst taking his parents and sister with him. The parents passed away and are buried at Windthorst. Enrnest married Minnie, a girl from Germany (who had come with her sister). They had four children - Elsie, Helena, Annie and William. In later years Ernest and Minnie resided in Toronto and Armprior, Ontario. Irvin married Martha Schoelbring from Armprior. They left the Kendal district in 1928 and went to Timmins, Ontario where he worked in the mines. Helena married Dave Wimmer of Windthorst. They had one daughter Elaine hwo is a music teacher. They later moved to Toronto where Helen passed away in 1973.
